The antique pump organ is a remarkable assemblage of a multitude of odd-shaped parts that becomes capable of producing wonderful music for worship or entertainment.  But it is like a buffalo in the house--taking up a lot of space and hardly ever useful.  Not many people have enough grazing land in their house to hold one. 

Last night the organ's music was entertaining when we put it up for sale at Robert York's American Auction. Our friend, Lota Alsup, played "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and the crowd sang with enthusiasm.  The auctioneer announced that proceeds would go to ministry to Alzheimer's patients, that he was taking no commission, and that the selling price would be matched by his ......

In some circles this title is a common cliche.  Many common sayings--certainly the title phrase--become common because evidence in life repeatedly verifies them.    

This story is about a pump organ that is at least 130 years old. 

 

Part One: This thing was in the basement of our house when I was in fifth grade and in my grandfather's house for many years before that.  In about 1962 when it came into my ownership I refinished and repaired it, and it has traveled with me like an elephant on my back ever since.  I have enjoyed it, but ... well, since I can't play it any longer it lives downstairs again--too good to send to the landfill but with little cash value.

Diana's devotional is the first one in the latest issue of The Upper Room, the widely distributed periodical.  Hers is September 1, which in my book makes her Miss September.  There is no centerfold.  We hope that it does the work for which it was written: to encourage others to greater trust and obedience.
