This PowerPoint presentation of some 130 slides defines, illustrates, and reveals the flaws in ten commonly used "Verbal Villains"--ineffective styles of communication. With cartoon humor, it helps people recognize their own styles of marginal conversation and to desire to replace them with more beneficial methods. The desirable alternatives of empathy, respect, warmth, advice (relevant, needed information), and confrontation are introduced. Plays on all PC computers; a PowerPoint Player is included. With narration it runs 26 minutes and functions as a means of self-instruction. It can be presented to groups either using the recorded narration or with "live" lecture based on notes viewable in PowerPoint's notes window. The Verbal Villains unit has been very useful early in communication skills training as a means of helping trainees abandon their familiar ineffective styles of response and be open to trying new methods.
